RV Appliance Repair

RV appliances often run on propane, electricity, or both, with ignition and safety components that are different from household versions. Below are common problems across the appliances RV owners request help with most, and what a diagnosis typically involves.

Common symptoms

  • Refrigerator isn't cooling on propane, electric, or both
  • Refrigerator cools inconsistently or only when parked level
  • Furnace fan runs but doesn't produce heat, or won't ignite at all
  • Water heater won't ignite on propane even though electric works
  • Microwave or convection combo unit has stopped powering on
  • Cooktop burner won't light or clicks without igniting
  • Appliance trips a breaker or blows a fuse when turned on
  • Unusual smell (especially a gas-like odor) when an appliance is running

What this usually involves

Absorption-style RV refrigerators rely on a specific cooling cycle and can be sensitive to how level the RV is parked, in addition to normal component failures. Ruling out leveling as a factor is usually one of the first steps before looking at the cooling unit itself.

Furnace and water heater ignition problems typically involve a sequence of components (igniter, gas valve, sensor) that need to be tested in order to find where the sequence is breaking down. Because these systems involve propane and gas ignition, this is intentionally left to an in-person diagnosis rather than DIY troubleshooting steps here — especially if you notice any gas odor, which should be treated as a safety issue first.

Mobile-service context: A mobile appliance visit typically includes testing the specific appliance on its available power sources (propane, 12V, 120V shore power) and checking ignition or electrical components in sequence. Mention which appliance is affected and whether you've noticed any smell, unusual sound, or error indicator.
